Gerald Martin Construction Management is the construction manager overseeing the the final design and construction of the $120 million Spaceport America facility located near Engle, New Mexico, in Sierra County.
Spaceport America will be the world's first inland, purpose-built commercial spaceport. When finished, it will be capable of accommodating the activities of both vertical and horizontal launch space vehicles, serving as the base for pre-flight and post-flight activities, and providing a center for interested spectators.
The facilities Master Plan includes: an airfield, internal roadways, water supply and distribution system, waster water collection and treatment system, aircraft rescue and fire fighting station, fuel storage facility, and an iconic one-of-a-kind terminal and hangar facility (pictured below).
The Terminal Hangar Facility will be the centerpiece of Spaceport America, home to Virgin Galactic operations, and a premier tourist attraction. The THF was designed by URS Corporation and Foster+Partners.
US-based Virgin Galactic, a part of the Virgin Group founded by British entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson and regarded by many as the current world leader in personal spaceflight, will be the Spaceport's anchor tenant. Virgin Galactic will locate its primary launch and operational activities at Spaceport America, and its global headquarters in New Mexico.
Spaceport America functions as a catalyst for significant regional economic development and will be a key component in New Mexico's efforts to attract space-related business to the state, such as partnerships with third-parties to develop facilities in support of Spaceport America.
Gerald Martin Construction Management will be leading a team of highly skilled specialists in managing this exciting project. The team includes: HDR, one of the nation's leading engineering and architectural design firms, and Fiore Industries, a firm specializing in fire/crash/rescue facilities and environmental issues related to hazardous waste.
