On February 4th, Gerald Martin participated in a Job Corps presentation to 16 female students in construction trades. This effort, hosted by Les File Drywall, a longtime supporter of the outreach, seeks to bridge vocational training with real world experience.
Half a dozen women in the industry spoke to the group, sharing personal stories of how they became successful from trade careers and emphasizing the importance of early training. Discussion about expectations, safety, leadership, and outcomes were also focal points. TJ Schwertfeger, Estimator at Gerald Martin, Ltd., ran an interactive bid day simulation exercise and explained the role of estimating and the bid process.
Following the presentation, students were offered an opportunity to tour an active construction site, a first for the majority of students in the group. Gerald Martin Ltd. organized the job walk at a current project site, APS Food & Nutrition Distribution Center Renovation. The project had undergone demolition, and students were offered a glimpse of workers in the process of backfilling waste vent piping in the future commercial kitchen. Jim Orton, longtime Gerald Martin, Ltd. Superintendent, gave a tour of the site, fielding questions from students.
Gerald Martin Ltd. was pleased to host the Job Corps group, and is proud to take part in the education of our industry’s future professionals.
